The Flood of Video Games: A Games as a Service Future?

Video game quality and quantity are at an all time high, but how long can this period last, and how can gamers possibly keep up with the rapid, non-stop releases? Microtransactions and Loot crates may come and go, but changing to an online only future for access to playing AAA Video Games may not be as far away as you think.

You are totally right with there being waaay too many games to keep up with…
Let alone the titles i am interested in, not yet released

    The Last of Us 2
    Detroit Become Human
    Far Cry 5
    Days Gone
    A Way Out
    Sea of Thieves
    Yoshi
    Kirby Star Allies
    Pokemon Switch
    Metroid Prime 4
    and countless others…

  2. My video game collection is 300+ at the moment and I’d say I’ve completed less than a 1/3 of them. I’m constantly buying games and yes I want to play them all but I just don’t have the time and when I do I wanna play a AAA title, which pushes the lesser known games to the back burner.

  3. I know exactly what you mean. I have a switch, xbox and a ps4. I counted my backlog of xbox games and it was 22! I was too depressed to count the PS4 ones. I also have a ton of digital ones. There's only so many hours in a week. Doesn't help there are many games that take 40-60 hours to complete, like Persona 5, ugh.

  4. I am ok with games going digital or as a service (begrudgingly) because we’ll always have amazing Retro. And my backlog from Wii to NES is still unable to ever play em all. Even new gen doesn’t help but I’m growing more and more disgusted with new gen but then switch pulls me back in lmao

  5. Take a look into achievement completion rates – there are more people who play a game but don't finish it than people who do (sometimes less than 10%), but as with technology, marketers key on FOMO to motivate people to buy. "Don't buy this now and you'll be hard pressed to find it". But if you do buy it, are you buying it to finish it? Evidence would say that there isn't a large group of people who do this. I know there are many in our community that buy everything because they have to have it, but that's not the norm.

To me, if I rush to get through everything, then when we hit those lulls in releases (like the first year of a new console generation), I won't have anything to play at that point. What I"m trying to say is I don't think that the frequency of releases is too much. 2017 was a great year with a ton of amazing games, but the years prior didn't appear to be quite as populated. Maybe we should compare the prior generations and their 4th or 5th year on the market to see what the release schedules look like – I would estimate that there isn't much of a difference, we're just seeing a different marketing engine (and social media presence) in 2017 and on, giving the perception that there's more games that "everyone should be playing".

  6. This is why we all have the mentality of 'Everything needs to come to Nintendo Switch'. We all have these crazy backlogs, it would be much easier to tackle them if we could have our backlogged games portable and could fit them around our daily lives much easier…

  7. That's dope that bring up (time) bro!!! Man work , fatherhood, husband. Takes time out my day so I try to squeeze 2 to 4 hours of games a day and thats do to only staying up to 2am and sleepin til 6 am for work

  8. Very insightful Jeff, In my opinion I believe as tech. gets better Virtual Reality will allow a ton of great games to be rebooted so players can play as their favorite character. I know I would love to be Kratos in a VR reboot of God of War.
